There is a popular saying which says, “The light at the end of the tunnel is well worth the journey it took to get there.”

That is the situation at the Indorama Fertilizer plant in Eleme. The $1.1bn Urea Fertiliser plant is situated in the Eleme Petrochemical complex in Porthacourt, River State, Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has made remarkable progress on the 1.4 million metric tonnes of fertiliser made from natural gas. This would open the door to greater opportunities and, in so doing, Nigeria would become a major exporter of fertiliser to neighbouring countries like Ghana, South Africa, Benin Republic, and as far as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Nigeria has been a major importer of fertilizer. In fact, 80 % of the fertilizer used in Nigeria is imported. But with the Indorama fertiliser plant, Nigeria will transform from a main importer to a major exporter in the coming years.

The 84 kilometer from the gas suppliers’ processing facilities lies the plant for the supply of the feed stock gas. It would be run adjacent to the two existing pipelines within an existing right of way (ROW).

The location has developed rapidly as an international hub for manufacturing. With the Dangote Refinery and this fertiliser plant, Nigeria will quickly integrate into the global economy and will be one of the top five petroleum products and fertiliser suppliers in the world, thereby strengthening the Nigerian Naira through investors buying Nigerian goods with foreign exchange.

Moreover, with the signing of the petroleum industrial bill PIB into law, Nigeria will now be a transformed zone for doing business.

The 1.4 million metric TPA nitrogenous fertilizer complex, comprising a 2,000metrics TPD ammonia plant and a 4,000metrics TBD granulated Urea plant, and supporting infrastructure and utilities, is situated in Eleme, River state.
