The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) has said it is outraged at the continued delay in paying the entitlements of over 4,000 former staff of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited.
In a statement by ASRTI’s President, Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju (rtd) said these ex-workers are being tossed back and forth through bureaucratic red tape describing it as ‘a grave injustice to patriots who dedicated the best years of their lives to serving their fatherland.’
He said: “Nigeria Airways was never a private enterprise, it was the proud national carrier and a symbol of our collective sovereignty. The men and women who worked there were dedicated professionals who served with unwavering zeal, trusting that the nation they built would care for them in their golden years. Instead, they have been subjected to over two decades of agonising neglect following the airline’s abrupt liquidation in April 2003.
“The human cost of this delay is a national tragedy and a bad omen to citizens currently serving Nigeria dedicatedly. It is uninspirational to see hundreds of elderly beneficiaries dying tragically from age-related illnesses and preventable health complications—struggling with hypertension, diabetes, and basic penury. These senior citizens could have lived dignified, qualitative lives if their rightful benefits had been timely paid. Sadly, they have been reduced to enduring a dehumanizing cycle of false hopes.”
It will be recalled that in December 2025, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo announced at the centenary celebration of 100 Years of Civil Aviation in Nigeria that President Bola Tinubu, had approved the payment of the entitlements of ex- Nigeria Airways staff sometime ago and had forwarded it to the Ministry of Finance for implementation.
However, Onitiju said the administrative negligence and outright sabotage of presidential sincerity of purpose is unacceptable. He said it is heartwarming to hear that the reportedly “missing” presidential approval document has been tracked and advised that it should be acted upon forthwith.
He said: “Officials responsible for this systemic stalling , sabotage or misplacement should be held accountable in accordance with the appropriate public service regulations.
While we commend the efforts of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, we appeal to him to urgently liaise with the Minister of Finance and relevant authorities to effect these payments without further delay.
“These veterans served Nigeria and gave it the better part of their youthful years .To reward their decades of patriotic service with avoidable suffering and administrative ping-pong is a stain on our national conscience that must be corrected immediately.”

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has said it is alerting the general public on the activities of those it described as ‘unscrupulous individuals’ impersonating the agency and issuing fraudulent recruitment and appointment letters to unsuspecting members of the public.
In a statement signed by NAMA’s Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Abdullahi Musa, it said it views this development with serious concern, saying these schemes are calculated to exploit innocent job seekers and compromise the integrity and corporate identity of the agency.
NAMA said: “For the avoidance of doubt, NAMA is not currently conducting any recruitment exercise. Accordingly, any individual, group or organisation claiming to recruit, facilitate employment or issue appointment letters on behalf of NAMA is acting without the knowledge, approval or authorisation of the agency.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to exercise utmost vigilance and refrain from making payments, submitting sensitive personal information or entering into transactions with persons purporting to offer employment opportunities on behalf of NAMA.
“Any recruitment notice, employment communication or appointment letter purportedly emanating from the agency should be independently verified through NAMA’s recognised official channels before any action is taken. The public is particularly advised to disregard unofficial correspondence, social media messages and representations by unauthorised intermediaries.
“NAMA does not authorise individuals or third parties to solicit money or other consideration in exchange for employment. Suspected cases of impersonation or fraudulent representation should therefore be reported to the appropriate authorities.
“The agency will not accept responsibility for losses or consequences arising from dealings with fraudsters or unauthorised persons falsely claiming to act on its behalf.”
